The trekking Schedule

"Chadar Trek" gives you a unique opportunity to walk on the ice in the arms of the Himalayas amidst exquisite natural sceneries. For any adventure lover, Chadar trekking will be a memorable experience that adds colours to life. Zanskar in Ladakh experiences heavy snowfall in winter, after which all roads are closed. The natives of the land, the Zanskaris have no other option but to cross the frozen river of Zanskar for trade and other purpose, if they wish to move in and out of their land.

Recently the admirers of nature have identified this frozen river of Zanskar as the ultimate trekking route in Himalayas. The trek initiates from the village of Chiling located not far from the junction of Indus and the Zanskar River. Then the trek follows the river chasm through a magnificent landscape, a photographer's paradise, with occasional view of wildlife. The temperature of the area varies between minus 20 to 30 degrees Celsius in winter. Since the warm weather melts the ice, trekking is possible only during the frozen winter months. And after a day long tedious trekking, just like the locals, you can rest in the caves at night and experience the bed in a Himalayan cavern.

  1. Day 1: Early morning flight Delhi to Leh (3500m)

Leh is the capital of Ladakh. This is also the western tip of the Changthang plateau of Tibet. Snowcapped lands of Tibet and Leh share similar climate, geology, culture, tradition and religion of the natives. Leh is popularly recognized as the cold desert which is bereft of natural vegetation and harsh climate does not make it an apt place for living. Hence an overnight stay at a guest house is only recommended to the tourists.

  2. Day 2: Morning Sightseeing - The monasteries in and around Leh

Once you have reached such high altitude you must allow your body to get adjusted to such weather and climate. Enjoy the native culture and experience the rich Buddhist tradition by visiting the monasteries, like Shey, Thiksey and Hemis based in Leh. Do not miss the old Leh Palace and the Khardung La Pass (this pass is the world's uppermost road situated at 5,600m/18,400ft high, where vehicles can move comfortably). To complete all sightseeing, you will have to stay for a night at this place.

  3. Day 3: Next morning enjoy the drive to Chilling (3550m) and Trek to Shigra (3100m)

Start early in the morning and drive to Nemu, the meeting point of the Zanskar and Indus river. Today you start experiencing the walk over the frozen river. Since this is one of the most isolated areas of the Himalayas, you will be able to experience the quiet and secluded part of the world. This experience is both thrilling and eerie. Just enjoy the night on the frozen river while sleeping inside the tent.

  4. Day 4: Trek to Dibyokma.

The beauty Zanskar chasm is often compared with the bridge on the river Kwai. The bleak scenery of the land enchants you when you visualize the different shades of the sun rays when it strikes the mountain range. Wake up early in the morning after an overnight camping and enjoy the sun rise at this area.

  5. Day 5: Trek to Nerak Pullu (3390m)

While walking continuously along the gorge you have now reached a point from where you can visualize some amazing frozen waterfalls, which cannot be reached in any other period on the year. Next you reach a 1,000 year old bridge which is beautiful for it's ramshackle appearance.

  6. Day 6: Trek to Lingshed

On the 6th day of the trek you continue walking on the river for about an hour and then start following the Linghsed nala after leaving behind the Zanskar River. At Lingshed you share room with the villagers in their home and not in a camp.

  7. Day 7: Rest Day. Around Lingshed

As said sunday is funday. So, rest completely after six long days of tedious trekking. In the afternoon you may just visit the Lingshed monastery, and enjoy a cup of tea with the monk.

  8. Day 8: Trek to Nerak Pullu

The return journey begins and you again reach the Nerak pullu and stay for a night in the Camp.

  9. Day 9: Trek to Dibyokma

At Dibyokma also you will have to stay in the camp for just one night.

  10. Day 10: Trek to Tilat Sumdo

Finally on the tenth day you can trek and reach Tilat, and this will help in shortening the distance towards Leh. Once you have reached Tilat you may now reach Leh the next day within afternoon. Enjoy the night camping with camp fire and fun.

Stay overnight at the guest house
