If you wish to learn the fundamentals of mountaineering, the spectacular Beas Kund area on the Shiti Dhar ridge is where you start. It has the Ladakhi (5345m), Friendship Peak (5460) and the Shitidhar(5294m) peaks that pose a challenge to your skills and courage. This is for the intrepid and hardy since a climb can test your physical endurance to the limit.

Happily, you do not need to have prior experience of mountaineering and simply by joining the course you gain a few but thorough tips and training to empower you to take on the challenge of conquering the peaks. Enjoy that ineffable feeling of achievement as you stand victoriously atop the peak after an arduous and physically challenging climb, discover possibilities and strengths within yourself through this glacier mountaineering course crafted for newbies. In order to go through this course attendees have to be physically fit.

  1. Day 01: Delhi – Manali (1960m)

    starts from Delhi at 7:40 am to Kalka through Shatabdi Express. Reach Chandigarh at 11:00 am. Drive 8 hrs to reach Manali late in the evening. Overnight at hotel.

  2. Day 02: In Manali (1960m)

    Explore the town after launch. Options to visit the Hadimba temple, the Vashisht hot water springs or the Roerich Art Gallery in Naggar. Overnight at hotel.

  3. Day 03: Manali to Solang (2500m)

    After breakfast drive (30mins) to Solang Nalla. Do some hikes to gain some altitude. Learn about the usage of mountaineering equipment. Overnight at guest house.

  4. Day 04: Acclimatisation at Solang (2500m)

    Do hiking around Solang. We leave with pack lunch for a long day’s trek. In the evening we pack our gear for the climb. Overnight at guest house

  5. Day 05: Solang – Bakkarthach (3328m) 5 hrs trek

    Walk 5kms on a jeep track till Dhundi after breakfast. The trail goes along the river Beas before crossing it and then ascends steepily to reach the grazing grounds of Bakkarthach. Overnight Camp.

  6. Day 06: Bakkarthach – Friendship Base Camp (3586m)

    A short descent to the river and then a steep ascent brings us to the base camp. We cross the river Beas on a makeshift log bridge set up by the shepherds just below the snout of the Beas Kund Glacier. Overnight Camp.

  7. Day 07: Training day at Base Camp (3586m)

    Spend the day around the base camp and practice movement on snow/ice. Learn to use the basic knots and rope management. Practise various belaying techniques. Overnight Base Camp.

  8. Day 08: Open Route from Base Camp to Camp

    Ferry loads till Camp I and open the route till the shoulder on the south east ridge of the mountain. Camp construction, camp management and cold weather camping skills. Overnight Base Camp.

  9. Day 09: Base Camp - Camp (4600m)

    Spend the day in the camp. Learn the basics of glacier travel and how to spot & negotiate crevasses. Overnight Camp.

  10. Day 10: Camp – Summit (5289m) – Base Camp

    It’s best to be up at the summit early in the morning to make the best of the weather and get good views. Descend all the way to the base camp. Overnight Base Camp.

  11. Day 11: Contingency day for bad weather etc
  12. Day 12: Base Camp – Manali.

    Trek Beas Kund to the Dhundi roadhead and drive back to the comforts of the hotel in Manali. Celebratory dinner in the evening. Overnight at hotel.

  13. Day 13: Manali – Delhi

    Drive from Manali to Chandigarh and board the Kalka Shatabdi at 18:20 to reach Delhi by 21:40.
